CHILDREN ARE AN HERITAGE OF THE LORD (PSALMS 127:3)

[This short address was presented by John E. Enslen to family members gathered at the Overlook Lodge at Pinto in Wetumpka, Alabama, preliminary to the blessing of baby Ayla Nora Allen, his first great-grandchild, on October 2, 2022.]

Today, citizens and soldiers anxiously await the latest news about the war in Ukraine.

Business leaders and prospective home buyers nervously monitor interest rates.

There is intermittent civil unrest accented by uncivil discourse.

Truckers and travelers fret over the price of fuel at the pumps.

Volunteers work storm damage and voting officials work the polls.

Football fans are apprehensive about the fate of their favorite teams.

The list is both exhausting and inexhaustible.

All the while, in unnoticed homes scattered amongst the panicking parade of people running to and fro, mothers in pain give birth to babies. But who is thinking about hurting mothers and crying babies? Hardly anyone but the closest of family members, with one important exception—God.

You see, God manages the world in advance with chosen mothers and timely arriving babies.

When God needs continents to be discovered, a chosen mother gives birth to a baby, and they name him Cristoforo Columbo.

When God needs a war for independence to be won, a chosen mother gives birth to a baby, and they name him George Washington.

When God needs a nation to be saved and not severed, a chosen mother gives birth to a baby, and they name him Abraham Lincoln.

When God needs another nation to be saved, a chosen mother gives birth to a baby, and they name her Jeanne d’Arc.

When God needs new elements to be discovered, a chosen mother gives birth to a baby, and they name her Marie Sklodowska, who will marry Pierre Curie.

When God needs computers to be programmed, a chosen mother gives birth to a baby, and they name her Augusta Ada Byron, who will marry William King, Earl of Lovelace.

When God needs the gospel in its purity restored to the earth through a living prophet, a chosen mother gives birth to a baby, and they name him Joseph Smith, Jr.

In our day, a chosen mother gives birth to a new baby, and they name her Ayla Nora Allen. Not even adoring parents can fathom the future of a child reserved for these last days. Expectations will be surpassed, and destiny will outdistance dreams, but not in the designs of God, who is never surprised. You see, he manages the world in advance with a chosen mother who gives birth to a baby.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
