A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and a tennis player is no better than his second serve.

I find it amazing that two people born more than half a century apart can still enjoy serious competition on the tennis court.

Horseflies that try to annoy tennis players on the court generally have a short lifespan.

People immensely enjoy fishing and hunting, but they are satisfying a much greater human need than the mere need to eat some fish or game.

In sports, there is a saying that goes something like this: “Don’t let a defeat beat you twice.” If you are still thinking about the last game that you lost when the next game is played, then you will likely lose that next game, too. In other words, don’t waste today on yesterday, or don’t let yesterday also use up today.


THOUGHT: April 9, 2021

Sometimes your only victory is in being a good sport after being defeated. I think on Judgment Day, that will be a more important victory than a checkmark in the win column.

Some people are endowed with so much natural talent that only an overbearing, insensitive coach can extinguish the talent.

I should not quit playing sports simply because I have grown old. I will actually grow older faster if I quit playing sports.

Golf and tennis seem to be similar in this one respect, the fewer the skills that a player possesses, the greater the personal misconduct we see during play.

Can you imagine hearing trash talk at an international chess match? Most people who trash talk probably don’t even know how to play chest.

I need to maintain my mental health in tandem with maintaining my physical health. I think the equivalent of pushups, sit ups, and jogging would be reading, writing, and arithmetic.
